Akagera National Park, located in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, is a biologically rich area that showcases a stunning diversity of habitats and plant life. Covering approximately 1,120 square kilometers, the park protects Rwanda’s last remaining savannah ecosystem and is named after the Kagera River that flows along its eastern boundary.
The database of the National Herbarium of Rwanda comprises more than 2000 herbarium specimen records (incl. 362 P.N.A. abbreviation) historically collected from Akagera National Park. This checklist represents 120 plant families and more than 850 species including indigenous (native) and introduced (non-native) plant species. All family and species names were verified as accepted by the Plants of the World Online database, and species synonyms are presented were applicable.
Plant taxonomy was standardized using the APG IV (Angiosperm Phylogeny Group IV, 2016) classification, which reflects the most current phylogenetic relationships among angiosperms. Fern and lycophyte taxonomy was standardized according to the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group I (PPG I) classification, which reflects the most recent consensus on pteridophyte phylogeny (PPG I, 2016).
